I recently upgraded to Excel 2010 and I am having a problem formatting a chart as I was able to do in my previous version (2003). My chart has multi-level category axis labels, and I would like to have a vertical grid line separating each major group of categories. In my earlier version of Excel, I could right-click on one of the gridlines and then specify the spacing I wanted between gridlines. In Excel 2010, as soon as I indicate that I want multi-level category axis labels, I get a vertical gridline between each category and I am unable (or haven't yet figured out how) to alter the spacing. If I deselect the multi-level axis label option, I can adjust the spacing between the vertical gridlines, but the formatting of the labels is inappropriate. Hopefully there is a simple solution to the problem and I won't have to resort to using the drawing tools or text boxes to achieve the desired results. I have attached a workbook with samples of the data I am using and the two formatting results I have been able to achieve - neither of which is what I want.

Send Emails from Excel using VBA and Macros. This course starts from the Basics and builds up to more advanced examples with attaching workbooks, worksheets, PDF's, automatically sending emails, including a signature, error handling, increasing speed, and more. Similar TopicsSeemingly super simple, but I can't figure it out. When I create a bar chart, the bars are horizontal. I want the chart bars to be vertical. It tried to rotate the chart so that it is vertical, but the 'rotate' options are greyed out. How do I get those bars vertical? Hi there. I know it sound like a really simple thing but its really stumped me. Instead of the y axis being on the left hand side, i wish for it to cut at 0,0. I have positive and negative values and I need it to be in the centre instead of on the left. I have tried formatting both the axis and it would appear that the x axis already cuts the y axis in the right posistion so i need to format the x axis to make the y axis cut it at 0,0. I have already tried typing in 0 instead of 1 and it keeps saying it need to be number more than or equal to 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nicole
Hi all, I've had a long search through your pages to see if this question has been answered before but having browsed through about 50 pages worth of threads I couldn't see anything, but if I am repeating prior information I do apologise. I've written a macro that is relatively simple. It just takes some information in one format, rearranges it, adds some formatting and performs some calculations. Nothing incredibly fancy but it works fine on my computer. Now, I need to share this macro with some other people, so basically I've just sent that excel file on to the people that need to use it. Should be fine and in most cases it is, however there is one user who although they can open the file, can't seem to get the macro to run properly. It seems to get a small way through the macro but then stop with no error messages or any sign that it hasn't completed properly. I have checked Macro Security level and that is the same as mine, Tools - Add-Ins is the same, In Visual Basic, Tools - References is the same as mine. It is the same Operating system and the same version of Excel. I have even signed into this person's computer as myself (it's a big company network thing) and tried to run the macro and it works fine, so there is nothing wrong with the hardware. I've googled and searched and tried everything I can think of but I'm no closer to solving this problem, so if anyone has read through this wall of text and can come up with a possible solution, that would be greatly appreciated to save me from tearing ALL my hair out! Thanks very much for your time. So I've got some data, which has the approximate form of a sine function. I want to find all the x-axis intercepts. I tried using the intercept function and swapping around the y values for the x values, but it only returns 1 value (so I'd guess it uses a linear regression to estimate a single line through the axis). I was thinking of trying a nested if/and statement but I haven't quite figured out how to do it. Basically I want to identify the two values where it switches from positive to negative and also indentify the values where it goes negative to positive, I can then fit a straight line between them to find a better approximation of the intercept (though it might not be necessary). Preferably I'd like it all one function as I'm not doing it in VBA (I might do later though, we'll see). Can anyone suggest how I'd find these value or the x-intercept. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This may be less of an Excel question than a general data display question, but I'll try here. I have 3 variables that I'm charting. I have one on the primary axis and it's values are in the billions. I have one on the secondary axis and it's a percentage. I need to display a 3rd who's value is in the millions. If I put it on the primary axis, you cannot see modest changes. Is there a tricky way to get all three on one graph? I know I could split on two graphs, so that's my backup plan. Thanks, Dave I'm trying to separate bars inside a bar chart into separate groups. Adjust the gap applies to all bars. How will I be able to achieve what I need? Please help and thanks I have been using Excel (XP) to make a text chart for several months. Some of my text entries are rather lengthy. The past two weeks these lengthy entries are showing up as pound signs (#########) when I click off the cell. I know the text will fit in the cell, and the problem isn't solved by making the cell bigger or using a little bit less text. I have the cells formatted as 'text' and 'wrap to fit'. I have printed the pages and the printed version also has pound signs. I just want my text to show up! Is there a trick to copy-paste a group of cells into Outlook? I don't want to paste as a picture (shows up as an attachment and is lost when someone else Replies), but formatting is skewed when pasted as an Excel object. Right now I'm recreating the table in Word, then pasting, which doesn't loose formatting. A specific problem is cells which don't have borders show up with very light grey borders in Outlook. This, I do not want. TiA Hi...hoping someone can help with a grouping problem. I have 50 rows that I want to group. Rows 1-10 should be a group, 11-20 are a group, etc. The problem is, when I group 1-10 and then group 11-20 seperately, excel automatically makes 1-20 a single group and removes the individual groups that I wanted. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
I'm unable to group/ungroup rows or columns on an excel worksheet that was emailed to me by a co-worker. It's an existing file so I don't know what restrictions were placed on the workbook. What can I do to fix this problem? Hey everyone, I'm really hoping someone can help me with this... I need to plot percentages over time in a line graph in excel. I don't want to have to do a percentage equation in the spreadsheet, I just want excel to take two sets of values and display the percentage in the chart. For example, I need B1 as a percentage of B2 for week 1, C1 as a percentage of C2 for week 2, etc.... Can someone please offer a suggestion for how to do this? I would really appreciate it. Also, would it be possible to link data from other sheets in the workbook into one single chart?
From limited experience I know that excel calculates dates via serial numbers. I have formulas to add a number of days to a cell containing an entered date and display the resulting new date (ie. 03/01/2011 (c34)+11 = 03/12/2011) I am seeking to leave resulting formula cell blank until a date is entered in the input cell. Currently when the input cell is empty the formula cell obviously displays 1/11/1900 using the above example. What conditional format would achieve leaving the formula cell blank until date data in entered into the source cell? Hopefully a simpler question for your experience level than mine. Dear Sirs, Am in need for this solution very badly and what could be a better place than excelforum ! I have an MS Excel File (2007 version) sample file attached, which has name, designation, blood group and so on. The last column is for hyperlinking photographs of individuals. In the same folder where I have saved this excel file, are lying photographs of individuals. While scanning the photographs, I have saved them serially i.e. 1,2,3 and so on. In the Excel file, in last column, I have given the respective serial numbers. In order to hyperlink one has to select that particular Cell, press Ctrl K and you automatically go to the folder containing individual photographs, you select that photo and OK. Problem : I have to do this hyperlinking one by one and if there 1000 photos, lot of time is wasted. Solution Needed : Just in case of excel formula, which we copy and paste, Can I get a command by virtue of which the column titled Photo or column next to it gets automatically Hyperlinked to respective photo WHEN I copy and paste such command to all cells in that column. Thanks a million and warm regards ::: Jack
I know that you can do PASTE > VALUES in order to keep your conditional formatting on an existing sheet, but sadly the people in my office are prone to not understanding this ('It's a bit technical') and so they just pasting blocks of text from elsewhere and lose it all..... Does anyone have any suggestions about how to maintain the formatting when people just do a traditional C&P ? Thanks
I would like to copy a small table from Word into one cell in an Excel worksheet. The first column of the table is a list of numbers. I tried converting the table into text with manual line breaks and tab stops to divide columns and rows, but that didn't solve my problem. Excel pastes the data into several rows. When I try to merge them, I get a warning that the selection contains multiple data values, and merging into one cell keeps the upper-left most data only. What I tried that didn't work: * Formatting the Excel cells as text before pasting the data. * The various options for 'Paste Special.' The closest I got was inserting the table as a Document Object, which could be a workaround, I guess. What I am saving for when all else fails: * The obvious solution of copying row by row into one Excel cell. The data in the table is information about my dad's medications. I would like to have reference charts of how to identify the strength of each tablet by its color and markings. I got the info from the manufacturers' websites and entered it into tables in Word, which I would like to copy into a more comprehensive file I am creating in Excel. The first column of each table is the strength of the tablet, entered as 1 mg., 2 mg., etc. The subsequent columns describe the shape, color, and markings. There are 3 tables, each with about 4-5 rows. Is there a way to copy each one - whether as a table or as text - into a single Excel cell without losing data? Many thanks.
I have a co-worker's file that he is having trouble with. He is using Excel 2000 SP3. When copying a cell with a formula in it of '=D6+C6' and pasting it into the next cell down, it will display the same value in the cell as the calculated value from above, but has the correct formula displayed in the formula bar of '=D7+C7'. Example: A1: 50 A2: 10 B1: 60 B2: 20 A3: Formula: =A1+A2 Displays: 60 Right click A3, Copy, right click B3, paste A3 displays 60 When I click save, it will change the display value to 80. I am trying this on his workstation and mine. Mine has Office 2010, so I think there might be an issue with the file itself. Also, not just copy and paste. I can also just click the top cell after filling in the formula and then drag the bottom right of the cell downward and it will do the same of filling in the correct formula, but have the incorrect value. I know that I could get him to just click save each time before really looking at the results, but that is just a band aid to the problem. Any ideas how to fix this? Hello, Firstly i haven't used excel to a great extent since my college days. So i'm having to re-learn 99.9% of everything i once new... I am volunteering for a non profit organization and trying to create a reservation system for the rooms that they have - kind of like hotel software, but in excel (i did a similiar thing in college but for plane seats) Please find it attached. What i need it to do: Copy all of the info from the main page to the guest lit (a new row each time). From the guest list to the Gannt chart - i did a few tutorials on dynamic gantt charts using conditional formatting but cannot get them to work when based on data on a different worksheet. Finaly is there a way to check for availabilty on any given date? if just someone could point me in the right direction, i would be appreciate it so much words can't express!!! Best Regards, Jamie P.S for the calender drop down on the main page, i'm using 'microsoft time & date picker 6.0) http://www.2shared.com/file/6521961/...ibsV05b32.html - pop ups on this site http://www.easy-share.com/1906519167/RibsV0.5b3.2.xlsm - same file, better website I'm trying to use conditional formatting to highlight phone calls that came in between certain hours. The call times are in the custom format h:mm, although it could easily be changed to an Excel time format. I'm using Excel 2002. I want the cell to have a different fill color if it falls within particular time frames. Example: If the call came in between 22:00 and 23:59 color is light green. If the call came in between 23:59 and 08:00 the color is yellow. Example spreadsheet is attached. Thanks in advance.
Hello I'm quite experienced Excel user. I've never come across this problem but tinkering in every conceivable way within Excel settings and the solution has eluded me. I have added a worksheet created elsewhere (it is a form I need printing, with the data coming from 2 sheets I have created from scratch) which has pre formatted cells for Date and Client Name etc. When I try to reference the cell in this added sheet from my 2 sheets, instead of the result, it always displays the formula, not the result. I have tried doing it from one of my sheets to reference to this new, and that displays the result and not formula. I can't imagine why it's doing this and I've never seen it happen before. Formatting cells, giving cells names rather than the usually adequate of reference to the Cell Number doesn't change things. I wonder if I've picked up some legacy protection from the original form but can't see anywhere in the tools etc that's obvious. There's about 50+ cells that need referencing and I got to get this done for work. Please help me. This is my first need to post on a Excel Forum as I've always found help or answers from other peeps or internet but this one is making me scratch my head big time. I've been using Excel for years and had very few issues. However, I recently went into a spreadsheet to update it and was unable to select and enter data into an individual cell. When I click on a cell and try to enter #s nothing happens (my num lock is on). Then when I try to click into another cell it just highlights that cell, along with any other that I move my cursor over. Once I click on one cell I can't stop the highlighting from happening. I can't even click on anything in the toolbar. I am extremely confused, can anyone help? |
Change the color of gridlines in a worksheet. Excel Details: Select the worksheets for which you want to change the gridline color.Click File Excel Options. In the Advanced category, under Display options for this worksheet, make sure that the Show gridlines check box is selected. In Excel 2010, as soon as I indicate that I want multi-level category axis labels, I get a vertical gridline between each category and I am unable to alter the spacing. If I deselect the multi-level axis label option, I can adjust the spacing between the vertical gridlines, but the axis multi-level label functionality is lost.
