As the kb article states, it 'installs the legacy Java 6 runtime' and 'is exclusively intended for support of legacy software'. Apple also advises that you 'Keep your software up to date' and 'If you need Java, download the latest version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle I constantly get the warning about upgrading. Mar 11, 2011 To solve it I had to install Java for OS X 2015-001 provided by apple (it's Java 1.6), which fixed the Versions subfolder structure by pointing to the old Java 1.6. Not the best, but it fixed my error!
Get the latest version of Java from Oracle.
If Java 7 or later is already installed, you can use the Java Control Panel to download and install the update:
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Java to open the Java Control Panel.
- Click the Update tab and follow the onscreen instructions.

You can disable the Java web plug-in, then enable it only when you need to run a Java web app. While the plug-in is enabled, browse only the websites that need the Java web app. When you're done with those websites, disable the Java web plug-in again.

Administrator privileges.
You cannot install Java for a single user. Installing the JDK and JRE on macOS is performed on a systemwide basis for all users. Administrator privileges are required to install the JDK and JRE on macOS.
When you install the JDK, it also installs the JRE. However, the system will not replace the current JRE with a lower version.
To determine the current JRE version installed on your system, see Determining the JRE Version Installed on macOS. To install an earlier version of the JRE, you must first uninstall the current version. See Uninstalling the JRE on macOS.
When you install the JRE, you can install only one JRE on your system at a time. The system will not install a JRE that has an earlier version than the current version.

Note:
Installing a JRE from Oracle will not update
java -version
symlinks or addjava
to your path. To do this, you must install the JDK.
